How I Work
Alexandra Dencheva, a Counselling Psychologist registered with the HCPC and IPTUK.
My approach is collaborative, warm and non-judgmental, offering a safe, thoughtful space where you can feel supported and understood.
My work integrates evidence-based psychological therapies with a compassionate, trauma-informed and neuro-affirming approach.
I offer space for reflection, insight and change.
Together, we build understanding, strengthen resilience, and work towards meaningful change at a pace that feels manageable for you.
What to expect
Therapy can feel daunting at first, especially if you are not quite sure where to begin. That is absolutely fine. My role is to make the process feel clear, supportive and purposeful, while working at a pace that feels manageable for you and supporting your capacity to cope and change.
- A collaborative and respectful space where we think together about what has been happening and what may help.
- Time to explore patterns, experiences and emotions with curiosity and care.
- Where helpful, practical strategies that support day-to-day wellbeing and emotional regulation.
- The opportunity to reflect on personal values, relationships and life transitions.
- A pace that feels manageable and responsive to your needs.
- A focus on strengthening your confidence, resilience and ability to navigate future challenges.
The process
1) First contact
We agree next steps and arrange an initial consultation. You can share what has brought you here and what you hope might change.
2) Assessment
We explore what is happening for you, what has and has not helped, and begin to identify themes and goals. There is no obligation to commit to treatment
3) A clear care plan
Where helpful, we shape a practical plan and use an evidence-based approach that fits your needs and circumstances.
4) Ongoing sessions
Sessions balance reflection with practical steps. We review progress together and adjust the plan where needed. We focus on self-efficacy and strengthening skills, strategies and resources that support you beyond therapy.
5) Reviewing progress
I regularly ask for feedback to ensure the sessions meet your needs.
6) Ending well
Endings matter. We approach them thoughtfully so you leave with greater confidence and clarity about the future. Together we complete a Relapse Prevention Plan.
When I came to therapy I only knew how I was feeling, but I didn’t know what kind of support would suit me best. Alex helped me make sense of my experiences and gently guided me through the process. Over time I began to understand my patterns, manage my anxiety more confidently, and feel more in control of my life.

Common questions
Do you offer long-term therapy?
Where possible, therapy has direction and purpose. We review progress together and aim to support independence rather than continuing indefinitely without a shared focus.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what you are facing and your goals. We discuss this early on and review it together as therapy progresses.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes, with the usual professional exceptions. If there is serious risk of harm to you or others, confidentiality may need to be broken to keep people safe.
Do I need to know what type of therapy I want?
Not at all. Some people arrive with a referral and a model in mind, while others arrive with uncertainty. Both are welcome.
